French Péage: Integrating France's Motorway Tolls With Fleevo

France tolls around 9,000 km of motorways at the barrier, and trucks pay per kilometre. Here's how the péage and Télépéage systems work for HGVs, and how Fleevo turns the charges into per-vehicle cost.

France's motorway network is one of Europe's most extensively tolled, and for fleets running north-south across the country the péage is a major recurring cost. It is a barrier system, but electronic tags mean trucks needn't stop, and, as always, the real value is in seeing what each journey cost.

How French Tolls Work

France uses a barrier-based, per-kilometre toll (the péage) rather than a vignette. Around 9,000 km of motorways, plus several bridges and tunnels, are tolled for all vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and above. You pay on entering or leaving each tolled section, and heavy goods vehicles are charged in the higher vehicle categories (classes 3 and 4).

Télépéage and TIS-PL

Electronic payment runs through Télépéage: a badge or on-board tag linked to the vehicle that is recognised automatically at the barrier, letting the truck use the dedicated lane (marked with an orange "t") without stopping. The HGV-specific scheme is known as TIS-PL (Télépéage Inter-Sociétés Poids Lourds), with tags such as Liber-t and provider equivalents. Note that toll tariffs typically rise each February, so budgeting on last year's rates understates the cost.

Why It Matters for Fleets

Because the péage is per kilometre and class-based, the cost of a French route depends on exactly which motorways a truck uses and how it is classified. Left on the toll provider's statement, that detail is invisible.

Why Connect It to Fleevo

Connected to Fleevo, each French toll charge is attributed to the vehicle and route that incurred it and sits alongside fuel, other tolls, and fines, so the true cost of your French lanes is clear and comparable across the fleet.

Bringing French Toll Data Into Fleevo

Fleevo is built to consolidate fleet charges, so French péage costs can sit in one view, attributed to the vehicle and route that incurred them, alongside your fuel, other tolls, and fines. French Péage FAQs

Does France use a vignette or a toll?

A toll (péage), charged per kilometre at barriers across roughly 9,000 km of motorways, bridges, and tunnels, not a time-based vignette.

What is Télépéage?

France's electronic toll payment: a tag linked to the vehicle that is read automatically in dedicated "t" lanes. The HGV scheme is TIS-PL, using tags such as Liber-t.

Which trucks pay?

All vehicles of 3.5 tonnes and above, with heavy goods vehicles charged in the higher categories (classes 3 and 4).
