What Is a CSA Score?
CSA, short for Compliance, Safety, Accountability, is the FMCSA's safety program. It scores carriers using roadside inspection results, violations and crash data from roughly the past 24 months, expressed as a percentile from 0 to 100 in each category, where a higher number is worse.
The Seven BASICs
Scores are grouped into seven Behavior Analysis and Safety Improvement Categories (BASICs): Unsafe Driving, Crash Indicator, Hours-of-Service Compliance, Vehicle Maintenance, Controlled Substances and Alcohol, Hazardous Materials Compliance, and Driver Fitness. Crossing an intervention threshold, around 65% for most on-road BASICs and 80% for Hazardous Materials, is what draws FMCSA attention.
What Triggers a DOT Audit
- A BASIC over threshold, especially Unsafe Driving, Hours of Service, or Vehicle Maintenance.
- A serious crash, or a worsening crash and inspection trend.
- A complaint from a driver or the public.
- Data anomalies, such as reported mileage that does not match inspection records.
- Being a new entrant, which brings a safety audit in the first 12 months.
The Records That Get You Through
An audit is a records exercise. Expect to produce HOS and ELD logs, DVIRs and a systematic vehicle maintenance history, driver qualification files, drug-and-alcohol testing records and Clearinghouse queries, and IFTA and IRP records.
